Merzouga is a small village in south-eastern Morocco, close to the Algerian border, at the foot of Erg Chebbi, the country's most famous sea of sand dunes. For most travelers this is where the Sahara finally looks the way they imagined it: golden dunes rising high above the flat stony desert, camel caravans at sunset and a sky full of stars at night.
Getting there takes some planning, because Merzouga is a long drive from Morocco's big cities. This guide covers what to see and do, where to sleep, how to reach the dunes from Marrakech or Fes, and when to go.
Erg Chebbi is a field of wind-blown dunes that stretches for roughly 22 km from north to south. The highest dunes reach about 150 meters, and their color changes through the day, from pale gold at noon to deep orange and red at sunrise and sunset. The edge of the erg is only minutes from Merzouga village, which makes it the most accessible large dune field in Morocco.

Most visitors spend at least one night in a camp inside the dunes. Luxury camps offer private tents with real beds, en-suite bathrooms with hot water, dinner served in the camp and breakfast facing the sunrise. Standard camps are simpler, with shared facilities. If comfort matters, ask before booking whether your tent has its own bathroom and whether the camp is reached by camel, by 4x4 or both.
Merzouga village also has hotels and kasbah-style guesthouses on the edge of the dunes, a good choice if you prefer a fixed room or want to combine a short camel ride with a night in a hotel.
From Marrakech: Merzouga is about 560 km away, roughly 9 to 10 hours of driving. Almost every trip splits the journey over two days, crossing the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass and stopping at Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the Dades or Todra gorges. A 3-day private tour, with one night on the way and one night in the desert, is the most popular format.
From Fes: the route is shorter, about 470 km or 7 to 8 hours, through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, Ifrane and Midelt. Many travelers continue from Merzouga to Marrakech, which turns the desert into one stage of a Fes-to-Marrakech journey.
By air: the closest airport is Errachidia, about 130 km away, around two hours by road. There is no train to Merzouga, so a private driver is the most comfortable way to travel.
The most comfortable months are October to April. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring warm days and pleasant evenings. In winter (December to February) the days are mild but desert nights can drop close to freezing, so camps provide heavy blankets. Summer (June to August) is very hot, often above 40°C at midday, so camel rides are kept to early morning and evening. For more detail, read our guide to the best time to visit the Sahara.
One night in the dunes is enough to see the sunset, the stars and the sunrise. Two nights let you add a 4x4 tour of Khamlia, Rissani and the surrounding desert at a relaxed pace. From Marrakech, plan at least three days in total because of the drive.
