Marrakech to Merzouga: Route, Best Stops and How Many Days You Need

Road leading toward the Merzouga desert dunes from Marrakech

Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are the main reason travellers head south-east from Marrakech. The journey is long, but the road crosses the High Atlas and some of Morocco’s best landscapes, so it is worth planning the stops carefully.

This guide covers the distance, the best route, how many days to allow and how to travel comfortably.

The Route

Leave Marrakech and cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, then continue to Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. From there the road follows the Dades or Todra valleys before reaching Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. The scenery changes constantly, from mountains to palm groves to open desert.

How Many Days?

A direct trip is possible but very long. A 2-day trip means two heavy driving days with little time to stop. Three days and two nights is the best balance, with a night in the Dades or Todra area and one in the desert. With four days or more you can add Aït Ben Haddou on foot and a slower pace.

Best Stops

Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified village and film location, is the standout, and our Aït Ben Haddou guide explains how to visit. Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge add variety and good places to sleep.

Why a Private Driver

A private driver lets you stop for photos, choose your lunch spot, avoid fixed schedules and rest during the long hours. It is also more comfortable than a shared minibus. Our Marrakech to Merzouga private tour is built around this.

The Desert Night

The end of the route is a desert camp: a camel trek at sunset, dinner, music and a sunrise over the dunes. For help choosing, read our guide to luxury desert camps and our Merzouga guide.
