Best Time to Visit the Sahara Desert in Morocco

Sahara Desert Morocco

Planning a trip to the Sahara Desert is one of the most exciting parts of any Morocco itinerary — but timing matters. The desert's extreme temperature swings mean that choosing the right season can make the difference between an unforgettable adventure and an uncomfortable one.

Spring (March to May): The Sweet Spot

Spring is widely considered the best time to visit the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Daytime temperatures are warm but manageable, nights are cool without being freezing, and the light across the dunes of Erg Chebbi is simply spectacular for photography. This is peak season for luxury desert camps and camel treks.

Fall (September to November): A Close Second

Autumn offers nearly identical conditions to spring, with slightly fewer crowds. If you're planning a private tour and want a quieter desert camp experience, this is an excellent window.

Summer (June to August): Proceed with Caution

Summer daytime temperatures in the Sahara regularly exceed 40°C (104°F). It's not impossible to visit, but tours need to be planned around early mornings and evenings, with plenty of hydration and shade. Our luxury desert camps are equipped for summer comfort if this is your only available window.

Winter (December to February): Cold Nights, Clear Skies

Winter days in the desert are pleasantly warm, but nights can drop close to freezing. This is actually the best season for stargazing — the Sahara's night skies are extraordinary in winter. Pack warm layers for the evening.
