A night in a desert camp is one of the most memorable parts of a trip to Morocco, and the quality of the camp makes a big difference. Luxury camps offer private tents with real beds, good service and a quiet setting away from crowds.
This guide explains the two main areas, what luxury really means in the desert and how to choose a camp that suits your trip.
Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, is the classic Sahara experience with large golden dunes, a camel trek at sunset and a sunrise over the sand. It needs at least two or three days because of the distance. Agafay is a rocky desert about an hour from Marrakech, so it suits a short stay or a first desert night. Our guide to Agafay vs Sahara compares them in detail.
Look for private tents with proper beds, quality bedding and, in many camps, an en-suite bathroom. Good camps serve a proper dinner, offer music around the fire, provide a camel ride and a sunrise and keep a small number of tents so the setting stays quiet. Cold-weather heating and good lighting are signs of care.
Check the location relative to the dunes, how far you walk from the vehicle, the tent types, the number of guests, what is included (dinner, breakfast, camel, transfers) and recent traveller reviews. A private driver who knows the camps can help you choose one that matches your comfort level and your route.
Autumn to spring is the most comfortable, with warm days and cool nights. Winter nights can be cold, so camps provide blankets and some heating. Summer is very hot. For more detail see our guide to the best time to visit the Sahara.
Merzouga is reached by a long scenic drive through the Atlas, Ouarzazate and the Dades or Todra valleys, or from Fes through the Middle Atlas. A private driver turns the drive into part of the journey. Read our Merzouga guide and our guide to Marrakech to Merzouga. You can also see our luxury desert camp experience in Merzouga.
