Erg Chigaga is the largest and most remote dune field in Morocco, far from roads, towns and crowds. For travellers who want the Sahara to feel empty and silent, it is the alternative to the busier Erg Chebbi at Merzouga.
This guide explains how to get there, what to expect, how it compares with Merzouga and how many days to plan.
Erg Chigaga is a vast sea of dunes with no village at its edge and no traffic. Camps are few and spread out, so the experience is more private and the night sky exceptionally clear. The dunes are large and the landscape wilder than at Merzouga, where the ergs are fringed by a lively tourist village. If your priority is solitude, this is the place.
You drive from Marrakech over the High Atlas, through Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley, past Zagora to M'Hamid El Ghizlane, around 8 hours with stops. From M'Hamid the last stretch to the dunes is off-road and must be done in a 4x4, usually 1.5 to 2 hours. This is why a private vehicle and an experienced driver matter. See the Zagora guide for the stage along the way.
Merzouga is easier to reach, with more camps and activities, and its dunes are tall and photogenic. Erg Chigaga is harder to reach, quieter and wilder, with fewer people and a stronger feeling of remoteness. If you have only two or three days, Merzouga or Zagora is usually more realistic. Compare the options in our private Sahara tour planning guide and the Merzouga guide.
The better camps offer large private tents with real beds and bathrooms, good dinners, and a quiet setting far from other camps. Because everything must be brought in across the desert, prices are usually higher than elsewhere, and quality varies. Our guide to luxury desert camps explains how to compare them.
Three days is the minimum and leaves little time at the camp, so four days is better, with a second night in the desert or in the Draa Valley. The best season is October to April, when days are warm and nights cold. Summer is extremely hot and not recommended. In southern Morocco near M'Hamid El Ghizlane, south of Zagora and close to the Algerian border.
Yes. The last stretch from M'Hamid is on tracks and usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours in a 4x4.
It is wilder and quieter, but harder to reach. Merzouga is easier and has more choice of camps.
