Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, is far from Marrakech: expect roughly 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops, across the High Atlas and the Draa-Tafilalet region. How many days you give it decides whether the trip feels like a journey or a long drive.
Most itineraries leave Marrakech over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stop at Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, continue through the Dades or Todra gorges, and reach Merzouga in time for a sunset camel trek. The return takes the same long road, or a different one towards Fes.
A 2-day trip works if you accept very long days of driving and little time at each stop. It suits travellers who only want to say they slept in the desert.
Day 1: Marrakech, the Atlas and Aït Benhaddou. Day 2: the gorges, then the dunes, a sunset camel trek and a night in a desert camp. Day 3: sunrise over the dunes and the drive back. See our 3-day private tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.
An extra day lets you add Zagora or Erg Chegaga, a second night in the desert, or a slower route back to Marrakech or on to Fes. It is the best choice for families and for anyone who dislikes rushing.
Roughly 560 km by road, about 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops.
Not comfortably. It is a very long road, and you would arrive too late to enjoy the dunes. Two nights is the sensible minimum.
Yes. Zagora is closer, so it suits a shorter trip, with smaller dunes than Merzouga. Erg Chegaga is wilder but takes longer to reach.
