Ait Benhaddou is a fortified village of earthen buildings on the old caravan route south of the High Atlas, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It can be visited from Marrakech in one day, but the drive over the mountains is long.
This guide explains the route, what to see, how the day works and when an overnight is the better choice.
Yes, but it is a long day. With around four hours of driving each way, you spend about eight hours on the road and a few hours at the site. It works well with an early start and a private driver. If you can add a night, you can also see Ouarzazate and the surrounding area without rushing.
The road climbs through the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with mountain villages and wide views, then descends toward the drier south. Ask your driver to stop at viewpoints. Some travellers add a stop at the Telouet kasbah on the way; agree this in advance as it adds time.
The ksar is a cluster of earthen houses and towers on a hillside, and visitors can walk up through the lanes to the top for views over the valley. For history and practical tips, read our Ait Benhaddou guide and our Ouarzazate guide.
A private trip lets you choose the start time and stops. See the private day trip from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou and read how a private driver in Marrakech works.
If you want to continue to the dunes, a longer trip is better than a rushed day. Compare options in our private Sahara tour from Marrakech guide and the other day trips from Marrakech.
About 180 km, roughly 4 hours by road each way over the Tizi n'Tichka pass.
Yes, with an early start. It is a long day, so an overnight stay is more relaxed.
A private driver lets you choose the start time and stops, and rest on the long road.
Around two hours is enough to walk through the village and enjoy the views.
Spring and autumn. The pass can be cold in winter and the south is hot in summer.
