Imlil, Morocco: Guide to the High Atlas Village Below Toubkal

Berber village and green valley in the High Atlas Mountains

Imlil is a mountain village in Morocco's High Atlas, about 65 km south of Marrakech. At around 1,740 meters above sea level, it sits at the head of a green valley of walnut trees, apple orchards and terraced fields, surrounded by peaks that keep their snow for much of the winter.

It is best known as the starting point for treks to Jebel Toubkal, which at 4,167 meters is the highest mountain in North Africa, but you don't need to climb a summit to enjoy it. A day in Imlil, with a walk between Berber villages and lunch facing the mountains, is one of the easiest ways to escape the heat and bustle of Marrakech.

Why Visit Imlil

Imlil shows a very different side of Morocco from the cities and the desert: cool mountain air, Amazigh (Berber) villages built of stone and earth, and paths used every day by local families and their mules. The village is the main gateway to Toubkal National Park, and most walks start right from its main street.

Climbing Toubkal from Imlil

In good conditions Toubkal is a non-technical climb, but it is a real high-altitude trek. The classic route goes from Imlil past the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch to the Toubkal refuge on the first day, then to the summit and back down on the second. Trekkers in Toubkal National Park must be accompanied by a licensed mountain guide, and from December to March snow and ice usually make crampons and an ice axe necessary.

How to Get to Imlil

Imlil is about 65 km from Marrakech, roughly 1.5 hours by road through Tahnaout and Asni, with a winding mountain road for the last section. Shared taxis run from Asni, but most visitors come with a private driver, either on a day trip or for a stay of one or two nights.

Where to Stay in Imlil

The valley has simple mountain guesthouses and boutique kasbah-style lodges with terraces facing the peaks. Staying overnight lets you see the valley at sunrise and take a longer walk the next morning before returning to Marrakech. Best Time to Visit Imlil

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the best seasons for walking, with mild days and clear views. Summer is a pleasant escape from the heat of Marrakech, as Imlil is much cooler. Winter (December to February) brings snow to the peaks and cold nights: the village is beautiful, but high trails and the Toubkal summit need winter equipment.
